Benefits of hearing with both ears / the reason for having two ears
A qualified audiologist will explain how two ears act like a microphone for the brain. With our ears located on either side of our head, when a sound is picked up the brain calculates which direction the sound has come from due to time differences between the arrival of the sound at each ear. The brains magnificent ability can calculate which direction the sound has come from due to a sound being received microseconds earlier in one ear than the other. For anyone with hearing problems and only one ear properly functioning, origin of sound is impossible to determine. Even more importantly, the quality of any sound is far better when it is heard by both ears. Speech heard by just one ear appears flat and lacks essential nuances. In most cases, two hearing instruments are fitted to those with impaired hearing in both hears.
Function and dysfunction of the ear
The ear is obviously a highly complex organ made up of three connected parts: the outer ear, the middle ear and the inner ear. Hearing loss can be caused by damage to any of these three areas. Hearing loss resulting from damage to either the outer or middle ear is called conductive hearing loss. From the inner section of the ear the auditory nerve carries sound information to the brain. Hearing loss which is caused by a damaged inner ear is known as sensorineural hearing loss. A person suffering both conductive and sensorineural hearing losses is said to have a mixed hearing loss. For us to gain a better understanding of hearing loss, it is essential to know how the ear functions.
